For Performa 09, Mike Kelley will present three short dance/performance pieces in the Judson Memorial Church inspired by the darkly funny vignettes in his 2005 film and video installation “Day Is Done,” including “The Horse Dance of the False Virgin,” “The Judson Church Horse Dance,” plus live musical selections from the soundtrack. Premiering will be “Extracurricular Activity Projective Reconstruction #33″ (Ladder Piece), a work involving 13 people assembled on and around a large ladder playing music on horns. These performances will bring to life some of the hilarious and disturbing characters featured in “Day Is Done,” all of whom are based on found photographs of extracurricular activities from American high school yearbooks, re-worked for the context of the Judson Church, a historically rich venue linked with the experimentation of the Judson Dance Theater and many other artists throughout the 1960s and 70s. “Day Is Done” Judson Church will lead up to a larger, evening-length performance for Performa 11 (November 2011).

Active in both the music and art scenes since the late 1970s, Los Angeles-based artist Mike Kelley has produced a large body of work including sculpture, photography, and installations. Born in Detroit in 1954, Kelley has received numerous awards, including the Skowhegan Medal in Mixed Media and two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. Kelley has also been the subject of numerous exhibitions, including, most recently, Mike Kelley: Educational Complex Onwards: 1995-2008, WIELS Centre d’Art Contemporain, Brussels (2008), Life on Mars: 55th Carnegie International, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, (2008), and Mike Kelley: Kandors, Jablonka Galerie, Berlin (2007).
