SILA by John Luther Adams, Lincoln Center, NYC, July 25 and July 26, 2014
John Luther Adams SILA
I was part of the huge ensemble to premier SILA: The Breath of the World by John Luther Adams, outside at Lincoln Center. The clarinet/bass clarinet parts involved microtones and movement, and it was thoroughly beautiful. I don’t think I’ve ever performed for so many people.
Carol Robinson (a hero of mine) took this happy picture of me, basking in the Italian sunshine, after learning a helluva lot about Scelsi and clarinet playing. Thanks again Carol.
I spent a week in Sicily studying Scelsi’s clarinet pieces with Carol Robinson and this small and amazing group of saxophonists and clarinetists. Here we perform Scelsi’s Latin Prayers as a quartet in unison. I also performed Scelsi’s IXOR for solo clarinet and improvised with the trombonist/composer Giancarlo Schiaffini. It was an unforgettable time.
